IIM RAIPUR - Earth Hour

“Tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today”- Malcolm X

Kartavya - brought the successful world-wide ‘Earth Hour’ campaign  to the IIM Raipur campus on 14th Nov, 2013. At 11pm, lights were switched off throughout the college campus. The event reflected a superb show of solidarity by 200+ plus students committed to sacrifice a precious hour of their rigorous academic lives for the cause of acute power shortages, climate changes caused by our thermal and gas based power plants, and the awareness to adopt clean renewable energy. The dark hour witnessed some bright moments as students gathered to some impromptu musical performances. The camaraderie witnessed was unprecedented.
As per the estimates, the energy saved by turning off the lights for 60minutes will be sufficient to power 50 homes for 4hrs. This shows the power of collective contribution. If such an event can be replicated at a city or a state level successfully, states such as Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh that were crippled with acute power shortages this summer would be hugely benefited and so will be the environment. An obvious corollary would be an increased industrial output, i.e higher GDP, and a higher per capita which is a win-win situation for all.
We hope that the event encourages individuals to make conservation an intrinsic part of their everyday life so that the dream of building a greener planet is realized soon.
